A devout Christian throughout her life, Cicely Mary Barker intended her painting to reflect her faith and dedicated much of her great talent to religious depictions. This enchanting collection has been adapted from her original work.
The Bible Stories were originally published in 1936, entitled He Leadeth Me. Cicely was delighted to be able to work with her sister, Dorothy Barker, on this occasion, whose fluent and absorbing prose perfectly complements Cicely’s remarkable illustrations.
The selected prayers and hymns were chosen and illustrated by Cicely for two children’s collections in the late 1920s. They provide a wonderful demonstration of the charm and innocence of her art, her conspicuous empathy for children and her capacity for portraying human emotion with intense delicacy.
Cicely Mary Barker was born in 1895 in Croydon, South London. She was a delicate child who led a very sheltered life. Cicely relied on her own imagination for amusement and devoted much of her time to painting and drawing. Her illustrations were always well received, but she is most famous for her stunning Flower Fairies series, which brought her international acclaim. Nearly 50 years after her death, her talent remains a source of pleasure to many.
